About us

Our Herstory

Women’s Refuge Tāmaki Makaurau was established in 2023 in response to the growing need for family violence support across Central Auckland. As part of the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges (NCIWR), we stand alongside wāhine and tamariki experiencing family violence, providing compassionate advocacy, safety planning, crisis support and safe emergency accommodation.

Our service area spans Central Auckland and surrounding communities across parts of North, West, East and South Auckland. We work alongside wāhine, tamariki, whānau and community partners to strengthen connections, raise awareness of family violence, and help people access the support and safety they deserve. Grounded in care, dignity and manaakitanga, and guided by our commitment to partnership and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we are dedicated to building safer communities where all wāhine and tamariki can live free from family violence.

Our Purpose

To uphold the rights, safety and wellbeing of wāhine, tamariki and whānau impacted by family violence, supporting them to live with dignity, freedom and without fear.

Our Vision

Our Vision

For all wāhine and tamariki in Aotearoa New Zealand to live free from family violence.

Our Mission

To provide immediate safety, quality support and advocacy for wāhine and tamariki escaping family violence, while empowering women to achieve personal growth, self-determination and autonomy. Through education and advocacy, we work to challenge the attitudes, systems and behaviours that enable family violence and contribute to lasting social change.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi

We honour and uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi, recognising Māori as tangata whenua and embracing the principle of partnership in all aspects of our work.
